At HandmadeBallGloves.com we provide gloves created by craftsman use time honored techniques to create baseball gloves that will stand the test of time and meet the needs of each player on the team. That means we understand why each glove is designed differently and we know why. Each position and ballplayer has unique demands and requires a unique baseball glove.

Take the outfielders glove, for example. They are different than other baseball gloves for good reason. The outfielders are required to catch more pop flies that have traveled great distances – so the glove needs to be larger to increase the outfielder’s ability to catch the ball.

Early baseball glove makers seemed to understand this concept well, and outfielder gloves have always been larger than other gloves – with more support added to the wrist and to the fingertips.

An outfielder glove also has more padding than most other baseball gloves. If you’re going to be catching pop flies that travel that far that fast, it’s easy to understand why this is important. While the basic design and function of an outfielders glove is a constant, there are various styles of webbing to consider when purchasing an outfielders glove

Basket web gloves are created with woven strips of leather. This basket weave style is very strong, but also extremely flexible.

The modified trap web is very versatile. This web design is used by outfielders, infielders, and pitchers. It’s differentiated from the standard trapeze or six-finger design by the strip of leather on the top of the web, which adds stability.

Six Finger or trapeze web gloves are used almost exclusively by outfielders. The design has a deep pocket for maximum catching range and the voids in the pocket allow you to both block the sun from your eyes, but also see the ball through the pocket.

The Tennessee Trapper web is best described as a hybrid between the modified trap and six-finger syles. The “T-shape” of leather that makes up the pocket is one piece of leather where the modified trap utilizes two and the six finger doesn’t have a cross piece that isn’t lacing.

The single bar web is probably the most robust webbing. This pocket keeps a nice opening to receive the ball and is flexible enough to secure even the most difficult catches.
